Five questions to ask before joining a regional booking platform

Third-party booking platforms promise reach, but the commission structure and guest relationship trade-offs deserve scrutiny.

Five questions to ask before joining a regional booking platform

Regional booking platforms — sometimes council-backed, sometimes private — approach accommodation and tour operators with a familiar pitch: more visibility, less marketing effort. The decision is rarely straightforward.

1. Who owns the guest relationship?

When a guest books through a platform, the platform often holds the email address and booking history. If you leave the platform later, you may not be able to re-contact those guests directly. Ask for clarity on data ownership before signing.

2. What is the true commission structure?

Headline rates of 8–15% are common, but check for payment processing fees, currency conversion, and charges for premium placement. Model your average booking value through the platform versus direct bookings.

3. Does the platform attract your target guest?

A platform strong in international backpackers may not help a luxury eco-lodge targeting empty-nesters. Request anonymised guest demographics or at least origin data from existing operator members.

4. How does it interact with your direct booking engine?

Double bookings and rate parity clauses create operational headaches. Ensure your property management system integrates cleanly, or budget staff time for manual reconciliation.

5. What happens if you want to leave?

Notice periods, delisting procedures, and whether your listing reviews transfer are all worth confirming in writing. Some operators have found their property page remains active with outdated photos months after they thought they had left.

A balanced approach

Many successful regional operators use platforms for discovery and invest in direct booking for repeat guests. The ratio depends on your margin, your repeat-visit rate, and how much control you want over the guest journey.
